Research task- methods of promotion

How are films/artists promoted? How has this changed in recent years?
When releasing a new media, they will arrange press releases, advertising campaigns, merchandising, franchising as well as using social media and interviews involving the film makers and actors. The rapid increase in social media platforms and technology has developed a lot in the past decade. This makes it easier to promote your film. The younger generation are particularly savvy with new technology making the target audience a lot broader.
What different forms of marketing do we see?
There are a number of different forms of marketing, social media is a very good way of promoting your film. There is also offline marketing which consists of TV adverts.
-Outbound marketing includes any marketing efforts that are taken to introduce a product or service to someone who isn’t looking for that product or service. Some examples are cold calling, sending newsletters, billboards, and banner ads on different web sites.
-Inbound marketing focuses on having your company found by customers, as opposed to reaching out to them directly. When the consumer searches for that product/service on a search engine, the search engine results page will show inbound marketing results. Instead of using paid advertisements.
-Newsletter marketing and email marketing refer to ways of promoting your company/product through emails.
-Search engine marketing (SEM) is the way in which companies promote their business through paid placement on search engines like Google. Instead of increasing the organic search results that a website has, companies will pay to have their advertisements in the sponsored section of search engines.
-Direct marketing’s main goal is to send a message directly to consumers, without having to use any third party outlets. Examples of direct marketing include mail marketing, telemarketing and direct selling. Direct marketing is often preferable because the results can be easily measured, giving the marketer a better understanding of the success of that campaign. For example, when you sign up with a company such as Disney, you may be notified about deals, film premieres or events.
-Affiliate marketing most likely involves four different groups that contribute to the marketing effort. The Merchant is the company that is producing and selling the product. For example, when a film is being released merchandise may too be released in order to promote the product further.

Are there any innovative examples of promotion you can find?
-Mobile Marketing, along with Internet marketing, mobile marketing is part of the newest groups of marketing activities. Companies have been experimenting with the certain ways to reach consumers through their phones, especially with the rise of Apple’s iPhone. Some ways to marketing a product or service through a mobile phone include SMS marketing, in-game marketing, banner marketing on different web pages and location based marketing. Disney is a large conglomerate which enables tem to have a huge number of marketing materials, there are a number of games and apps which inform the user of recent releases to planning a day out at one of the resorts. This style of promotion has become huge due to the rapid rise in technology.
How has technical convergence and the proliferation of hardware changed how films/musics products are marketed ?
Technical convergence, due to the rapid development of media and technology, now changes the way in which media is marketed. Music apps and film companies may converge to market each other which will create a bigger audience as different people will be exposed to the marketing. This is also cross-media convergence, the companies are cross promoting each other. For example, the new James Bond films such as Skyfall and Spectre converged with Spotify to promote each other. By listening to the song it informed people of the new film, and when watching the film, Spotify is promoted as it informs the audience where they can enjoy the song.
Proliferation of hardware is a type of marketing which promotes the film through the use of teaser trailers, official trailers and advert. The proliferation of hardware has furthered how films/music is marketed as overtime technology has become more advanced which enables marketing strategies to become more successful. Audiences can download or stream films/media to the mobile devices or tablets and watch it on the go. The product is more popular as it is more accessible to a wider audience. However, there is a slight disadvantage as people now do not but the DVD copy, meaning the company loses out on its revenue. In addition, piracy has increased making It easy for audiences to save money.

Non-genre specific analysis- Avengers: Age of Ultron

This is an action, superhero film. I am analysing the first fight scene in the film and i will  analyse the first two minutes of the fight.
It begins with an army truck driving very recklessly through a forest. The fact there is snow is unusual as snow often symbolises beauty but it can symbolise mystery. The fire in the background of the wide shot represents danger. The camera follows the truck through the trees making the audience feel as though they are involved, keeping them engaged.
The gun shots that are fired aren't regular bullets making the genre clear. In addition, the mid shot of the female is shocking, you would not expect stereotypically to see a woman driver and a woman involved in a fight. It surprises the audience, sparking enigma. We want to understand why she is there.
The dramatic non-diegetic orchestra in the background builds up the tension. In addition the diegetic sound of the guns/lasers are
Moreover, her red hair stands out with the lack. The colour red has connotations of danger, fierceness. The colour black, which all characters appear to be wearing has connotations of power as well as morality, further implying how they are putting their lives at risk in order to win and perhaps save theres.
The camerawork remains very similar throughout, it follows characters making the audience feel involved. The aerial shots work well to establish the environment. It also shows how the main characters work together in the fight, it signifies that they rely on one another. However, there are shots that a slowed down for dramatic affect but also enables the audience to understand completely what is going on. The use of dolly shots work effectively as it can show every aspect of the fight. It gives a different perspective.
Once again , the colour red is seen again on the character of Thor as he wears a cape. It's a very intense colour that stands out clearly when in contrast with the background and the black uniform.

The next shot is in slow motion, its very effective and dramatic. It enables the audience to see each character with their power or strength. For example, the 'Hulk's' physical strength is shown but he does not obstruct the entire shot it simply puts into perspective his size in comparison with all the other characters. It also establishes the power these characters (The Avengers) have over the other characters. The high angle shots of the 'Avengers' fighting the other people, once again emphasize the strength and power they have over the other characters. The low angle shots of the individual characters further exaggerates this.

The shots continue and shows an outer space satellite, it emphasizes the fact that this film is a fiction/action film but also expresses the fact that this fight may be bigger than the 'Avengers' expect. The quick cuts are very effective in showing the different aspects of the satellite, showing how advanced the technology is. The quick cuts work well the show the action and to show more of the action that is happening, it keeps the audience engaged and excited. The fact it is not realistic can be appealing to an audience, it is an escape from real life. The mid and close up shots work well to introduce each character to the audience.

Non-genre specific analysis- Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire.

This is an analysis of the first two minutes of the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The genre of this film is fantasy fiction as well as action and thriller.
The film begins with the Warner Bros logo, it has been edited to fit the genre of the film. The darkness establishes the genre immediately and the slight fog suggests hidden information or the unknown. The darkness around further exaggerates this idea and implies dark magic. It instantly has a magical theme. As the camera zooms in on the logo, we eventually see a wall of skulls. It begins to pan down revealing a snake. The low key lighting is maintained building an atmosphere and creating tension. It sparks enigma, the audience wants to see everything and the low level lighting makes it difficult to focus therefore keeping them engaged. The camera then follows the snake as it comes out of the wall.
Snakes are often feared by people because they are dangerous however, snakes are seen as sly and evil animals that you cannot trust. The use of the snake may signify that the next character we will see are not trustworthy or are perhaps dangerous to the main character. In addition, the snake is moving through a graveyard which also has negative connotations of death. Also, graveyards are feared especially at night because its the fear of the unknown. The fact it is filmed during the night amplifies the mystery.
The next shot pans up to a statue of a skeleton with angel wings. Angels have religious connotations but the skeleton has negative connotations; the two images juxtapose, keeping the audience engaged. Skeletons are often associated with death and morality. Both images are two different ideas of morality. The dark colour palette used fits well with the shots as the colour grey is associated with depression and loss, maintaining the theme of death.
It then continues to pan up to the sky revealing the title of the film, the grey colour scheme is used in the title. The titles font looks magical, suggesting this film is fiction. Its sharp edges create a thriller vibe and makes it more dramatic.
The wide establishing shot (aerial shot) instantly sets the scene and appears to be quite sinister. A light turns on, the fact that the surrounding is in moonlight, shows that there is life but further sparks enigma, the audience want to know who lives in the house. The fact we only see a silhouette keeps the audience engaged. There is then a quick cut to a mans hand lighting the stove. The man appears to e old, it suggests vulnerability. Also he is alone which further emphasizes the fact that he may be in danger.
The house does look slightly run-down, implying the man can't keep up with mainitance. It suggests he may be a care taker elsewhere. The quick cuts give the audience an insight into the character. The fact a light from the house opposite shocks him implies he is completely alone. It also implies he may be in danger. Likewise, the character appears to be angry which suggests that he has to deal with trespassers often, he does not seem to be worried but the audience understand that everything may not be so ordinary. The character picks up some keys showing he is a caretaker.
The characters costume emphasises his age and once again the colour of his clothes are dull. The character has to use a torch in order to see. The fact he shines it at the camera heightens the darkness around. The mid-shot of the character reveals what the character looks like, he fact he is to the right of camera, shows the scene in the background (the graveyard). The low angle shots of the snake contrasts with the shots of the man, it suggests the snake has more power than the man  further implying that when he enters the house, he will be in danger.
The non-diegetic sound of the orchestra builds up the dramatic tension, setting up the audience for what is to come. When the snake appears the music alters slightly to have a more magical theme but then builds up again to exaggerate the fact that the snake is perhaps a threat to the main character.
